Reverse carved crystal was a technique created by cutting pieces of rock quartz crystal into a convex form and then polishing it into a cabochon shape. An image is carved into the flat side of the crystal and then hand painted. From the front, the imageappears to be almost three dimensional. Many different images were used in reverse carved crystal jewelry and artwork, but animals were some of the most common motifs.

Thisreverse carved crystalpinfrom theRetro (ca1940's) era is a wonderful example of the craft! The carved Essex crystal cabochon rests on a lovely iridescent Mother of Pearl backing setwithin a 14kt yellow gold bezel frame. The detailed hand painted image is incredibly realistic, portraying a lifelike fox hunt scene. The scene shows three equestrian riders jumping the fence after their accompanying three hounds. Surrounding the outside of the oval frame is a very delicate twisted gold wire border, a lovely finishing touch. The reverse sideof the piece has a smooth gold back and bar pin clasp and a mark for gold content, "14k". A very unique andartistic piece, it is perfect for anyequestrian lover or collector of reverse carved Essex crystal!

Measurements: The pinmeasuresapproximately 11/2" long, 1 1/4" wide, and is just over 1/4" thick.

Condition: The overall condition of the pin is excellent. Besides normal surface wear, there is no apparent damage to the gold setting or to the reverse carved crystal. The pin claspis secure and in good condition.
